An Inquiry into THE REAL

GIST

The solid world of our day to – day experience is only a heap of ideas. All ideas reside in the mind only. Each mind stretches out of its usual habitat the physiological body, to reach out not only the insentient world but also every other mind and become one with it but the degree of out – stretching varies from mind to mind. This should mean that there is a Universal Primordial mind of which all other minds are tiny offshoots. These offshoots however, will have fair weather if only they keep in  tune with the Primordial Mind.

SUBJECT

What is presented to the mind by the senses, on undergoing a scrutiny, reveals a totally new and strange substratum. The simplest examples are the  mirage and the rainbow. The rising sun and the stars present a spectacle which in every day life is taken for what it appears rather than for what it is. When we come to astronomical computations, however, we do concede that it is the apparently stationary earth which really revolves around the sun on the one hand, and on the other, the same earth also rotates around an axis passing through its own centre. In the case of colour of objects, their solidity etc. we hold on to the data furnished by the senses even more tenaciously and only under the smashing pain of analytical hammer do we admit that reality is to the contrary (Colour and solidity are only appearances and not true or real) Probably this is so, not merely because of the utilitarian benefits that accrue on accepting the verdict of the senses; but also due to the subtlty of the arguments adduced in the alternate explanation offered in the name of science and reality. But the investigator who goes on looking for truth or reality has more in store than what he asks for. He was looking for the mechanical pattern of the Universe which he misses completely and is confronted by a world of ideas, as can be seen in Sir James Jeans’ exclamation in his book (The Mysterious Universe) in the following words : “The stream of knowledge is heading towards a non – mechanical reality; the Universe looks more like a great thought than like a great machine.” Later scientists have bewildered the believer in a material Universe even more.

Now let us try to understand Sir James Jeans better. Every material body is cognised through its idea which is an inference drawn on the data furnished by the senses – one cannot cognise anything without associating it with its idea which however resides in one’s mind only. So he can dare say that there is an idea corresponding to every material object. It cannot be said conversely that every idea has got a corresponding material prototype. As an example consider ‘Government’. As an idea it exists and is real but has no mechanical prototype in the world of material bodies or it is non-existent and unreal in the mechanical world. In a like manner family, village, poverty, mercy, superiority etc., are also ideas and are true and real in the world of ideas but have no corresponding counterpart in the world of matter. These ideas, it will be seen, play a major role in the everyday life of man. There is yet another class of ideas which has no prototype in the material world but which forms an essential part in the world of physical sciences. Gravitation is one such idea. It is this class which must have been uppermost in the mind of Sir James Jeans when he commented as above. Subsequent Modren Physics has resolved the material Universe into Gravitation, Matter waves, Electromagnetic waves, Electric and Magnetic fields and such other ideas.

Man without eyes or ears or any other limb is conceivable. In the ultimate case this can take us to a man who has no limbs or body but a man without ideas or a man without a mind is inconceivable. In fact, mind is a must, even with less evolved species having lower capabilities.

Man has to rely on the inference drawn on the testimony of his senses even for ascertaining the existence of his limbs and body. But this is so common-place that the inference is not considered as such but is taken for unquestionable truth. As for the existence of the mind, it speaks for itself and so long as it does so no other proof is required. If and when it is silent what is proved is its silence rather than its absence. No proof ever forthcomes for its non-existence either.It is easy to see that the mind which can and after a sleep or swoon or any other form of activity must be the same and existed during the interval of inactivity also. Moreover, no one, be one a scholar or an imbecile, assertive or timid, sane or psychopath felt at any time a scruple regarding one’s own existence, though there will be insuperable difficulty if one should attempt to find out what is connoted by ‘One’. Knowledge of one’s own existence stands out in bold supremacy to every other piece of information and the contrast shall not be missed. This knowledge is called intutive knowledge and no proof in support or denial is needed or forthcoming.

The Material Universe of the Physicist with all its complexities resolves down to protons, neutrons and electrons etc. considered to be the smallest units of matter, together with electric and magnetic radiations, electric and magnetic fields, matter waves etc. These in turn constitute the sum total of energy (or momentum if one is so pleased) which is what the Universe is and is in its-simplest form capacity to cause change in the velocity of a material body. Velocity and magnitude themselves are relative quantities which means that any two observers in general cannot agree in respect of readings regarding a third body. Moreover we know, Albert Einstein once for all struck the death – blow to absolute space and absolute time making both of them relative. If velocity as well as the capacity to impart such velocity are relative the conclusion is that each observer has his own reading of the Universe. These observers are infinite in number spacewise as well as timewise. With infinitely large number of observers, each of whom has an equally valid observation of ‘the external world’ of  which each cherishes an ‘equally dear and true’ idea, how it is possible for a common understanding to evolve and be accepted is the next question. Evidently, such an understanding exists. Going one more step ahead, understanding crops up between man and man, between man and animal and even between animal and animal. Such a workable understanding springs forth in a comparatively short span of time. But the mathematical theory of information does not give room for even anticipating such an eventuality. According to Shannon of Bell Telephone Laboratories U.S.A. (reference is to his book entitled “The Mathematical Theory of Communication) “Any two given strangers without any prior understanding after communicating any number of times, however large but finite, can never come an understanding”

In fact however, an understanding evolves rather quickly between any two beings showing any two beings or minds are not total strangers. In other words each and every mind, be it of man or of animal, overstretches into all other minds. Thus all minds form one mind like a huge tree with its trunk forming the common mind while the tiny branches and leaves form the individual minds. The Primordial Mind is universal and other individual minds form part of it. As in dreams, any idea of, say, a mirage or a rainbow, a family or a Government or even a purely fictitious idea of a snake in a rope, is true to one so long as one holds on it, so also the idea of the Universe shall be true for the Primordial Mind so long as it cherishes that idea. The other minds in partial attunement with the Primordial Mind will also be in touch with the universal tableau in the same proportion as the attunement.

Now, some inferences are possible :

1. Just as one does not exhaust oneself in the ideas of one’s own making, so also the Primordial Mind will not have exhausted itself in the idea of the Universe which is its creation or the Primordial Mind has existence apart from its creation namely the Universe.

2. The Primordial Mind, limiting itself by greater involvement in certain ideas, has brought into manifestation the Universe and its innumerable living beings and keeps relentless contact with them.

3. The human mind can never severe itself completely from the Primordial Mind.

4. The human mind can and will always apprehend the Primordial Mind in a limited way and this can be greatly enhanced, but it can never comprehend it completely.

5. The human mind and the Primordial Mind behave in a similar manner in every respect but the human mind being limited does not entertain large fluctuations. (amplitudes)

6. It is prudence for the human mind to attune itself with the Primordial Mind, going against which is bound to bring insurmountable difficulties until the universal discipline is accepted wholeheartedly.

APPENDIX I : A very simple alternate argument to show that the material world is one of ideas only is as follows.

Words denoting a collection such as heap, group, bunch, crowd etc. refer only to ideas;. in other words, collective nouns indicate only ideas or fabrications of the mind. Secondly every so – called material object consists of parts and is denoted by a noun which is more appropriately a collective noun and hence every material object is only an idea. Even the ultimate particles of matter such as protons and electrons admit of parts such as inside and outside, circumference and centre and so on.

APPENDIX II : Alternate method of arriving at the existence of the Primordial Mind.

Supposing the original order of a pack of cards is the order and we go on shuffling the pack, there will be greater and greater disorder. This is sheer common-sense. A mathematical theorem in permutation confirms this conclusion arrived bycommon-sense. In the simplest terms this means : shuffling causes randomness. In Thermodynamics, randomness is connoted by entropy and the aforesaid theorem transforms simply as follows. The total entropy of the Universe steadily increases.In the world of day to day experience a different picture obtains. Suppose, I build a house. At every stage of building it, order as against disorder is introduced; In the process a mathematical cum physical law is contradicted. This capacity to go against the aforesaid law  on permutation is given to all living beings.Taking yet another view of the Universe, there is perfect order in the behaviour of the astronomical bodies. The atomic and nuclear world also is marked by perfect order. Obviously these insentient bodies must have been made to keep perfect order by some sentient being as per our finding above. But this Being must definitely be very much more powerful than I and yet similar to me.

A sample of Indian thoughts to the English reading public, that is how,I imagine, my friends will look at this literary labour of mine.As for my perspicacious readers, I daresay,they will feel, these are thoughts that visit their minds on and of . Only here, somebody has assiduously put them on paper.They are perfectly right. The following pages certainly do not contain anything totally new. As a matter of fact, anything too new is bound to be too stale sometime hence. The material presented in this volume, I believe, is bound to be tastefully fresh at any point of time. In other words evernew and what is evernew defies time or must have existed in the distant past as well; in short eternal, and what is eternal has got to be omnipresent or is pervasive of all minds. Hence this collection rightly belongs to all the people of all times, and to them I dedicate this in all humility.

Prologue

Father,
The relentless blazing forth of the pageantry that this universal drama of creation is, which is at once both infinite and endless is for my gratification: I have no doubts about that. The pagant across the screen of space and time is ever overwhelmingly lovely, highly passionate and infinitely varied but never stale. Thou knowest that I taste but an infinitesimal part of it for a trifle second. But thou hast put before me plans whereby I can infinitely augment my capacity for perception, spacewise as well as timewise and therefore I need miss not a drop of nectar thou pourest in Thy Merciful Munificence which
ill-matches with my pusillanimity. Even so Thou patiently waitest for the day, I shall have matured to fully savour Thy bounteous gifts, offered unassumingly.

TO MY MASTER – SRI SRI PARAMAHANSA YOGANANDA

When I speak of Thee, Master,
Words fail me; so does the voice;
And the welling up tears!
They blur the sight.
Yet in wordless words, voiceless voice,
Choked breath and upturned gaze,
May I pour my feelings
Unheard by any.

If I take to adoring Thee,
Fervour floods up in my bosom;
Makes me numb of limbs in toto,
While I sense Thee everywhere,
Even in atoms, space as well.
Thus find myself anchored in Thee
So give up all else as mere folly.

Should I start to talk with Thee
So as to unburden myself,
Telling all my love for Thee,
Thou dost stop me by assuring,
That Thou knowest all my thoughts
Present, past and to come.

And then, when I’m silenced thus;
Thou dost buoy forth in my heart,
The forum of my beloved self
Declaring in tone very coy
“Abide in me by being still:
Know anon; I am the Self.”
And dost spread Thy canopy of bliss
As I comply with the behest.

My Divine Beloved

(i)
Ah ! my lovely Blessed One loved most;
O! my prize of dreams and wakefulness;
Beloved One I looked for aeons past;
(Oh! I’m lost, I’m lost in bliss of Thee)

Such thick intimacy, that I confide,
Such soothing indulgence, that I’m satiate,
So benign, so grand, so full of beauty,
So regal, lasting and sublime,
So full of peace and crystal pure,
And in essence bliss inviting,
Ever so new, yet eternal
Hiding just behind my self.

Is there anything like this fairy?
Sweet and holy, great and good?
Lo! ’tis a point at the centre of heart
Guiding me at every step
By low whisper shy and coy.

O! My Beloved Divine, sweet as honey
Compares with Thee no gem, be it any
If all the joys are just a tiny drop
Thy bliss surely is an ocean deep

(ii)
By wringing longing, deep meditation
Guru’s espousal and Thy Grace
At last I glimpse the Divine Horizon
A crown, duly won in the holy race.

What oceanic surge of boundless Joy
And coaxing love that makes me buoy
Care and mercy, too vast to spell
Coupled with a surfeit of indulgence

And a deep sense of self – assurance
Also a hint of ending dualities
Besides an insight all penetrating
My bygone stand is lost somehow.

So when Ambrosia I got mouthful
I called Thee mother with a fervent bow.
But as They glory unfolds in full
Amazed as I ‘m at Thine intelligence
Power and authority in each instance
I long to adore Thee as my father.
Confronting in play or sprightly dance
I many calls Thee friend, sister or brother

Thus I take the nectar-sea for a comb
And sip the honey in the Divine womb
Warmly bashing like the celestial band,
Awaiting rebirth in the Divine land

Since no for long last this dreamlike feast
Flower must fade to give forth fruit more sweet
In time I ‘m wakend to awareness total
By clarion call of betrothal – spell.

Then a gentle feel of Thy Grace Immortal
Opens the thirds eye of understanding
Satanic pranks in countermanding
Though very trying, not withstanding

Lo! the result is very outstanding
Bustle leaves out me bystanding
While the ego loses standing
Angels themselves are rejoicing

I sense vividly : Thou art all in all
Not excepting me the sun and stars all
Through intuition ever-unfailing, tall;
How surprising; Thou art neither big nor small
Nor late nor early nor far nor near
Even with all, always, everywhere
No front or back, no rim or centre
No up or down for Thee, the sole fabric

Omnipresent One, no one better or like
No one parallel or in step or partly like
Or even second to Thee; so unique
No foe to fight and kill; No pet to tend
No coeval who ‘ll contend
None whomever to woo or fend
Yet to Thy feet do the worlds bend
While Thou haste love for all, without end

No work or leisure, no beginning or end,
No stress or strain – though Thou dost stand
Right in the middle of every strand
Overlooking each and every stand
Be it man’s or beast’s, or of sand
A stand too tough for man to understand

Though Thou art neither light nor darkness
Thou doss light up both and cause the worlds
While Thy brilliance very well excels
All the splendour of a billion suns

All those in all the worlds, since time began
Obey Thy slightest wish, though Thou hast none,
Worlds in myriads bubble up from Thy Being
Glories ever-new well displaying
On inexhaustible screen of space and time,
For generations gone and to come;
And when the job is done in glee
Tracelessly go back to Thee.
No sin or evil touches Thee.
Ever-new joy never leaves Thee.
Blest is he who lives in Thee,
For he sips up mirth in Thee.
Fountain of ever-new bliss and joy
Blest am I for I enjoy
All Thy mirth and love-decoy
As I posit free in Thee
Who art the only Self in spree
No king or cobra no eve or elephant
No loss or distress have I to fear
No death or rebirth no past or future
No care or worry comes near me
Ever-new joy so very coy
Fills my awareness still as sky
And all I know is the only Self
Felt in the middle of my lonely chest.

Divine Beloved is God, the lovely Blessed One.
ending dualities-when God is realised there will be no dualities like hot & cold but only a uniform bliss which is God Himself.

The Grand Welcome

Longing all my life with keen intent,
Committed to making the best of what obtained,
Bent on giving a full scale welcome grand
The Royal Guest I waited for.

“Surely he should come this noon;
And then I give Him luncheon,”
So I thought and buoyed up highly,
Planning dinner – chores intently:
“Every dish so fresh, so tasty,
Only a King of Kings should taste it”

As I waited patiently,
Looking for His Majesty
One fine morning in winter
Hours did slip by gruesomely
And I yawned very restlessly.

At long last did noon arrive,
Not the Royal Guest I sought:
Someone very close consoled me:
The King will surely come; await.”

As I gazed at distant palms
Counting time very helplessly
An hour did pass by me slowly
But not the Royal Guest I sought
Someone close to me consoled: “The King will surely come; await.”

Time then trickled very slowly,
But my impatience did mount;
And I could wait no more after;
So set the tables then for lunch
Someone very close warned me:
“The King will come without fail”

So I held back for sometime
In unrelenting obduracy,
And when I could not hold my wits,
Asking if the king was sighted
Someone very close gently whispered:
“Prepare yourself, the King arrives”

Later still I heard some people
Shout for joy, “Oh, Hail the King.”
By which time my plate was empty:
The King was at my door; he beckoned,
“Come to me now” I obeyed.

Glossary :
The Royal Guest – God.
this noon – time of my deepest devotion
I give Him luncheon – I offer myself.
Planning dinner – chores intently – Correcting myself by inner and outer discipline.
Every dish so fresh, so tasty – My character must be spotless.
King of Kings – God.
His Majesty – God.

A Tiny Droplet

A tiny droplet in the sky
Up above the mountain high
Came to be as Kindly Wind
Lifted up the clouds around.

Soon the droplet grew in size
And awoke, did realize
“A fall is on though smooth it is.
Indeed a cause for fear there is.”

With this startling revelation
Rose an urge for good relation
With the neighbours newly found
For averting gloom around.

Then a mellow light ubiquitous
Enchantingly rumbled thus
In a tone so soft, so pleasing
And could be heard by all discerning.

“Feel the thrill of Living Present :
Pine not for a tomorrow absent:
Sparkling globes of water, ye,
Meet your Greater Self in glee.

Once for all ye thus baptized
Shall remain immortalized,
Set for ever in gay liberty
Feeling ever ubiquity.”

By the time the counsel ended
Droplet’s mood was aptly mended.
As its journey’s last step neared
Visible on earth was water pooled.

At once its joy knew no bounds
And with slow articulate sounds
Expressive of supernal joy
It joined the water: ahoy!

Glossary :
A tiny droplet in the sky – An individual soul in the vast space.
As kindly wind lifted up the clouds around – As God proceeded in his act of creation.
Droplet grew in size – The individual soul marched forward.

Obeisance To The Immanent Lord

To Thee in Thy prophets saints and angels,
And their teachings in august religions,
Enshrined in every ritual, custom
As well in hallowed scriptures ancient
Also in modest women and children,
And good people of all times ‘n’ climes,
Deeply moved I bow in obeisance
Humble, simple, and ever devout.

To Thee in Thy toiling billion
Men, women and children,
Toiling dawn to dusk round the year
Unmindful of hotsun, rain or storm
If only to keep, soul and body together,
Eking out a gruelling living
That denies the minimum needs,
Making stomach’s drone inaudible
By indifference, stark and cynical,
Covering loins from gross public gaze
To meet a norm that ‘s beyond reach,
And securing shelter against
Drenching shower or chilling wind
In slums, ghettoes or under the bridge
Bravely fighting insects, ants or mosquitoes,
Deeply moved I bow in obeisance
Humble, simple but ever devout.

To Thee in Thy criminals, crooked,
Injured, maimed or addicted ones
As well the lowliest and totally lost
Having pain, pathos and irritation
Or depression, hate, anxiety
Orb, some sort of ill unbearable
I do bow in soulful obeisance
Humble, simple but ever devout.

To Thee in Thy whales and sharks,
Octopuses or fish of every kind
As well in deep seas, waves and tides
Also in lions, tigers and gorillas,
Elephants, zebras and giraffes
Animals, birds, bats and snakes
Insects, worms and wasps including
Each preying ever on its prey
And in constant suspense spending
Half-starved day and more-starved night
I do bow in heart-felt obeisance
Humble, simple but never base

To Thee in Thy mountains,’ rivers and valleys,
Various kinds of forest trees big or small
Felled often by cruel axe of man
As well in creepers, bushes and mushrooms
And any kind of vegetation
Forced to stay put hungry and thirsty
In hotsun or freezing shade
All through life till the touch of death
Comes wiping out life for ever
I do bow in candid obeisance
Humble simple but never base.

To Thee in Thy quasars and nebulae
Milky ways, suns and stars
Meteors, moons and black dwarfs ugly
Each, whirling all too lonely
In bizarre space out-stretching
Knowing not impending collision
Causing destruction and effacement
Or bright novas, supernovas,
And in stellar space unending,
Surely a witness to global tragedies,
Awe-struck I bow in obeisance.
Humble simple and ever so fervent.

A Rose Bush

“Here I stand a rose bush lone
Mother Earth’s pride and talk of lawn,
As well joy of Infinite Sky
The Celestial Father, Most High,
Unseen I cannot be gone
Unnoticed I can’t remain.

A rose bush lone with an undertone
Coyly spelling love–led tune
Telling lovely damsel’s bloom
Youthful virgin’s maiden theme
Through full-blossomed ruddy roses
All exuding scent enchanting
And well-knit in style engrossing
Forming bouquets so engaging
Richly cast in comely shade
Shapely forms in gayest mood
With young exuberance in spate
And tender like newborn babe
Surely made for God of Love,
And in modesty I bow
Making gestures deeply fervid,
With abandoned spontaneity
Born of buoyant adolescence,
Unto the Loved One I adore
And I fervidly implore
Crouching in due supplication
And in libidinous anticipation
Lost in thoughts of my new worlds
Singing visible silent tunes.
All this tableau, all this cast
Got up for my Lord in Thee,
Yet avidly I atone
Excess acts of grinding love
Not unfair in youth I vow
Thus in modesty I bow
Due to the overpowering love
Fair and just in days of youth.
May I get response anon
Hey! I’m in the romantic bloom Looking for advances due.”

Musing thus I lay awhile
Drifting into a day-dream new
Thence I wandered in the clouds
Whence to a trance I slipped anew
Lost then was my immobility
I was transformed into a maiden
And slid onto the bygone age
There in Brindavan gardens
Amazed I was to behold Krishna
And his consort lovely Radha
Hand in hand they danced a while
And in a finale exciting
Pressed their trunks against each other,
While we onlooking maidens
Surely were swept off our feet.
I looked on the couple intently
And maidens as well in attendance
Sipping conjugal love vibrant
Overflowing, so abundant.
Krishna gave us a quizzical glance:
A graceful treat to virgin libido:
Radha then in deep orgasm
Furious she grew at diversion:
Cursed us cowherdess lasses
Into immobility of limbs.
Thence I “Taruni” turned to a bush
Bringing forth rose blossoms flush
For my Krishna, now Black Beetle:
My hairs standing on end then
Transformed were they into the thorns
Chaperoning this lovely virgin
Dedicated to the Beetle Divine
My drape in green keeping its hue
Became the leaves supple and swishy:
Radha herself became the lotus
Swishing oft in the lake of her aura.
Thus she claimed her lion’s share
Unlike any other ogling shrub
While her lover Dark Blue Beetle
Visited her and every shrub
Where he got oblation nectar – like.
When it came to my turn for an audience
Krishna, in turn, all the roses flanked
And pressed himself at every rose
With the avidity of a determined Cupid,
That orgasmic heights I soared
While exciting thrill passed through,
Each and every cell of this virgin.
Lo! at once my trance was gone
Leaving a hugging beetle amorous
Happily sipping honey in tit-bits,
Although rumbling wind and rivulets
Could be heard in chorus singing,
“Victory to Radha, Victory to Krishna,
O world-citizens, ye rejoice.”

Glossary:
Rose-bush stands for a young maiden not yet married. Wherever there is conjugal happiness,it is Radha & Krishna who are in consummation – it is believed in Hindu tradition.

The Question

“Mother, O mother of mine”
I cried one day in trepidation
My hairs standing on one end
My form sweating head to foot,
“Are you loving me in fact?
Will you love me thus for ever?
Tell me mother; assure me now;
For I’m sick to hear you say
I’ve loved you, my child always,
Ever shall I love you in due time!”
As I looked so flabbergasted
Sick and frightened she assured,
“O my love, this is a case of
Timeless Love unfolding itself.”
And when I looked askance at her
She pulled me to her bosom warm
And hugged me dispelling fears.

After a loving pause for a minute
I hesitantly put her a question –
“Mother” I said, pity pouring
From my every pore,
“Why does Jill not stickle her pup?
Why does Jim not open his eyes?
They say, he is dead and gone
And will surely bury him soon.”
“Yes, my son” mother replied
“Should you sob for that?” she added
With the tender lisp of a pup
I shot another question at her
“Mother, will I die one day,”
“Never” was her sure reply
“You will never die” she consoled.
“How do you say” I queried back
“Don’t you known resurrection of Jesus?”
She vehemently posed a question
Then with a clinching voice she quipped
“Man never dies; he sleeps
Only to wake refreshed, alert.”
Just then Joan was shouting loudly
“John, come at once; let’s play”
Soon we were on the meadow singing
“One, two, we are two.”
